Quebec holds the only North American fortified city north of Mexico City (with the walls still standing). La Citadelle is a star-shaped, maze-like series of stone walls built by the British to keep Americans out after two unsuccessful American attempts to seize and hold Quebec City. It was started in 1820 and took 30 years to complete.
